A drum is an instrument that creates sound by hitting a stretched membrane with an object. When the drum is hit it vibrates and creates sound.Drums first emerged around 6000 B.C. Mesopotamian excavations found small cylinder shaped drums around 3000 B.C. Drums can be used for more than just making sound. They have been used for Civil uses, messaging and religous uses.

A group of different toned drums were first started in marching bands in New Orleans.People then realized one person can play more than one drum at once.In the 1930s the first drum kit was created.Rock drummers in 1960 added to the standard kit. They added more toms(a type of drum) and cymbals.Later electronic drum machines were created to make sounds and music regular drums couldn't

Drums were made out of many things. Some from wood, metal fiberglass and acrylic. The sound is determined by the thickness of the head.Tightening the head will give it a higher pitch.Drums with heads with other sides can create a variety of sound and pitch.
